Thomas Schuler, MD

Dr. Thomas Schuler is the founder and Board Chair of the National Spine Health Foundation (NSHF). Originally established in 2002 as the Spinal Research Foundation, he co-founded the organization alongside philanthropist Guy Beatty with the mission to raise awareness about the successes of modern spinal treatments. In 2004, the foundation was renamed to better reflect its expanded mission of promoting spinal health nationwide.

Dr. Schuler’s commitment to spinal health is both professional and deeply personal. After experiencing severe neck pain, disc herniations, and nerve compression, he underwent a pioneering cervical hybrid surgery—a procedure he had previously introduced in the United States. This firsthand experience enhanced his empathy for patients and reaffirmed his dedication to advancing spinal care.

In addition to his work with NSHF, Dr. Schuler is the founder of the Virginia Spine Institute (VSI), which he established in 1992 to promote innovation in neurological and orthopaedic spinal surgery. Under his leadership, VSI has become the region’s largest multidisciplinary spinal practice, pioneering advancements such as robotic and ultrasonic spine surgery, regenerative and stem cell therapies, and motion-preserving techniques benefiting patients across the globe.

Dr. Schuler’s impact on the field has earned him national recognition. He has been named among America’s Top 50 Spine Surgeons and ranked in the top 1% of physicians in his specialty by U.S. News & World Report. As Chairman of NSHF’s Medical and Scientific Board, he collaborates with top spine experts to share cutting-edge research and best practices with both the medical community and the public.

After a distinguished clinical career, Dr. Schuler retired from practice in December 2024. His legacy includes serving as the spine consultant to the Washington Redskins and treating numerous professional and amateur athletes. He has played a key role in transforming spinal healthcare across the Washington, DC metropolitan area and beyond.

Dr. Schuler is also the past Director of the Physician Assistant Fellowship Program Director at VSI. He is a distinguished fellow of both the American College of Spine Surgery and the American College of Surgeons and is an active member of the North American Spine Society and the U.S. Capital Chapter of the World Presidents’ Organization.

Through visionary leadership, innovation, and compassionate care, Dr. Thomas Schuler has transformed the landscape of spinal health—empowering patients and shaping the future of the field.
