Peggy Schmidt Provenzano
Bio:
Peggy’s battle with scoliosis began at age 14, though it wasn’t until her late twenties that the condition became debilitating. Despite her lifelong commitment to fitness and exercise, Peggy’s scoliosis worsened, leading to frequent flare-ups of severe pain that often left her incapacitated. Over the years, she sought relief through various treatments, including medications, physical therapy, and acupuncture. However, nothing provided lasting relief.
By the time Peggy reached 55, her scoliosis had progressed to a 75-degree curve, accompanied by arthritis in her spine. It was then that she met Dr. Larry Lenke, a specialist in spinal deformities, who recommended surgery. Initially hesitant, Peggy put off the procedure until she herniated a disc and could no longer avoid the inevitable.
In 2018, Peggy underwent a life-changing total spine reconstruction, which included the installation of pedicle screws, rods, and bone grafts to stabilize her spine. Though the recovery was challenging, Peggy’s commitment to pre-surgery fitness and the support of a strong community helped her heal quickly. Within a year, she was biking 25 miles, a significant milestone in her recovery.
Today, Peggy enjoys a pain-free life and has returned to skiing and keeping up with her grandchildren. Having regained her active lifestyle, she also mentors others facing similar spinal challenges, advocating for thorough research and preparation before surgery. Peggy’s journey proves that with perseverance, the right medical care, and a commitment to recovery, anyone can reclaim their quality of life.
