Payton Simms

Connecticut | Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis | Spinal Fusion Surgery | Global Spine Health Advocate

Payton Simms is a student-athlete, scoliosis survivor, and emerging advocate whose journey demonstrates the power of resilience, gratitude, and service. Diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis as a child, Payton spent several years undergoing brace treatment in hopes of slowing the progression of her spinal curve. Despite her dedication to treatment, her scoliosis continued to worsen, ultimately leading to spinal fusion surgery at age 12.

Following surgery, Payton embraced recovery with determination and optimism. Motivated by the opportunity to live without the daily back pain she had experienced for years, she returned to an active lifestyle and now participates in lacrosse, volleyball, and swimming. Rather than viewing her surgical scar as a limitation, Payton proudly considers it a symbol of strength—a reminder of the challenge she overcame and the life she regained.

Inspired by her own experience, Payton joined orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Robert Brady on a medical mission to Jamaica through the Straight Caribbean Spine Foundation, where she connected with children preparing for scoliosis surgery. By sharing her personal story, answering questions from patients and parents, and offering firsthand reassurance about life after surgery, she helped ease fears and build confidence among children facing life-changing procedures. Her ability to connect with patients on a peer-to-peer level made a profound impact on both the children and their families.

The experience broadened Payton’s perspective on healthcare, service, and global communities. Witnessing the challenges faced by children with limited access to specialized spine care deepened her appreciation for the opportunities in her own life and strengthened her desire to help others. The mission also reinforced her long-standing interest in medicine and inspired her to explore a future career in healthcare.

Today, Payton continues to thrive academically, athletically, and personally. As a National Spine Health Foundation Spinal Champion, she shares her story to provide hope, encourage peer support, and remind patients and families that scoliosis treatment can be a pathway back to confidence, activity, and a fulfilling life. Through her willingness to serve others and her commitment to giving back, Payton exemplifies what it means to truly “Get Back To It.”

Fun Fact: During her mission trip to Jamaica, Payton received a unique keepsake—a scoliosis rod and screws used to demonstrate spinal correction—which she proudly keeps by her bedside as a reminder of both her own journey and the lives she helped impact through service.
