Necia B.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Severe Scoliosis (78-Degree S-Curve) | Corrective Spinal Fusion with Instrumentation
Necia B. is a scoliosis advocate, poet, community leader, and spinal fusion patient whose journey reflects extraordinary courage, resilience, and determination. Diagnosed with severe scoliosis at age 12 after months of testing and medical evaluations, Necia’s life changed dramatically when doctors discovered a 78-degree S-shaped spinal curve. Within months of her diagnosis, she underwent complex corrective spinal surgery, requiring the placement of five metal rods and screws to stabilize her spine.
Navigating surgery and recovery during her early teenage years brought significant physical and emotional challenges. Alongside chronic pain and ongoing physical therapy, Necia struggled with feelings of fear, isolation, and being different from her peers. Through faith, creativity, and perseverance, she found healing through poetry, journaling, mental health support, and connecting with others facing similar health challenges. Her experience taught her the importance of movement, self-advocacy, and refusing to let her diagnosis define her future.
Today, Necia remains committed to her health through exercise, aquatic fitness, and ongoing wellness practices while pursuing higher education and leading a nonprofit organization that provides food, clothing, health resources, and community support. Passionate about raising awareness for scoliosis and chronic health conditions, she shares her story to encourage others to stay hopeful, seek support, and embrace their strength through every stage of recovery. As a Spinal Champion, Necia reminds others that while a spine condition may be part of their story, it does not define who they are.
