Maeve Danaher
Chicago, Illinois | T3 – L3 | Double Scoliosis | Spinal Fusion Surgery
Maeve’s journey as a Spinal Champion began at just 13 years old. A lifelong swimmer with dreams of competing at a high level, Maeve’s world shifted when a routine physical revealed she had double scoliosis — with one spinal curve at 70 degrees and another at 60. Soon after, she met with her surgeon, Dr. Brett Lulu, who explained she would need a complex spinal fusion to correct the severe curvature.
In March 2024, Maeve underwent a 10-hour surgery at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Although the experience was daunting, her care team helped turn a frightening procedure into one filled with comfort, humor, and compassion. Post-surgery recovery brought new challenges: nerve pain, loss of independence, and emotional strain. Yet Maeve’s strong will and support system carried her through.
Just one day after surgery, Maeve took her first steps. Within a few weeks, she was walking regularly and regaining confidence. By June, she was cleared for travel and light activity, and by October, she returned to the pool — reclaiming her place as a competitive swimmer.
Now one-year post-operation, Maeve continues to thrive. Her story embodies courage, patience, and the belief that positivity plays a powerful role in healing. She hopes that sharing her journey will inspire other young patients facing scoliosis to stay hopeful, trust their bodies, and never give up on the things they love.
