John Poulson

Bio:

John’s journey with scoliosis began at age 14 when a routine physical revealed an S-curve in his thoracic spine. Although he had no symptoms at the time, doctors recommended spinal fusion surgery. Unwilling to give up his passion for athletics, John opted instead to wear a Milwaukee brace for several years while continuing to play football, hockey, and lacrosse.

For decades, John maintained an active lifestyle, excelling in college hockey, sailing, trekking, climbing, and open-water swimming. However, by his mid-forties, chronic pain began to take its toll. By age 64, even basic activities like hiking and swimming required immense effort. Seeking relief, John explored conservative treatments, including physical therapy, epidural injections, and chiropractic care. Unfortunately, nothing provided lasting results.

Determined to find a solution, John consulted multiple specialists before finally meeting Dr. Tarun Arora at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Arora and his team recommended an extreme spinal fusion from T8 to S1, requiring two consecutive 12-hour surgeries. Understanding the grueling nature of the procedure and recovery, John committed to an intensive pre-surgery training program to optimize his strength and endurance.

John underwent the life-changing surgeries in May 2024. Although complications—including the development of an ileus and atrial fibrillation—led to an extended hospital stay and significant muscle loss, his unwavering determination carried him through. At St. Mary’s Inpatient Rehab, he tackled six-hour daily therapy sessions with relentless focus, regaining mobility step by step.

Today, John is largely pain-free and has returned to hiking, swimming, and strength training. While he continues to work on balance and nerve pain, he remains committed to his recovery, setting ambitious goals like open-water swimming and climbing a 2,500-foot mountain near his home. Grateful for the care and support he received, John now shares his journey to inspire others facing similar spinal challenges. His story is a testament to resilience, patience, and the power of perseverance.
