Claire Thornber is a patient advocate, nonprofit founder, and survivor of cauda equina syndrome whose journey has transformed the lives of thousands of patients around the world. Once a busy entrepreneur running a successful cleaning business while raising two daughters, Claire’s life changed overnight when a herniated disc at the L5-S1 level progressed into cauda equina syndrome—a rare spinal emergency requiring immediate surgery. Unfortunately, delays in diagnosis and treatment resulted in permanent neurological damage and lifelong complications.
Despite years of recovery, chronic neuropathic pain, and adapting to a new way of life, Claire refused to let her diagnosis define her future. Instead, she turned one of the most difficult experiences of her life into a mission to improve the lives of others. She founded Cauda Equina Champions Charity, which now supports patients in more than 20 countries through education, peer support, advocacy, clinical psychology services, and healthcare professional training. Through her leadership, the organization has helped raise awareness of cauda equina syndrome, contributed to improvements in national care pathways, and empowered countless patients to advocate for themselves.
Today, Claire continues to live with the lasting effects of cauda equina syndrome while leading an international patient community dedicated to improving outcomes for others. She is passionate about helping patients recognize the warning signs of spinal emergencies, encouraging them to trust their instincts, seek timely medical care, and never lose hope. As a National Spine Health Foundation Spinal Champion, Claire shares her story to inspire resilience, promote patient advocacy, and remind others that even after a life-changing diagnosis, it is possible to find purpose, build community, and help others get back to the lives they love.
