Jonathan Carter

Georgia | Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease C5 to C7 | Two Level Cervical Fusion | Army Staff Sergeant | Platoon Sergeant | Ironman Foundation Ambassador

Jonathan’s spine journey began in his early twenties while serving on active duty, when he first noticed a persistent ache beneath his right shoulder blade. At the time, the discomfort was not sharp or alarming, and he attributed it to posture and long hours spent working at a desk. What started as a mild annoyance slowly became a constant presence in his daily life, lingering despite rest, physical therapy, and over the counter medications.

Over time, his symptoms progressed. By 2022, the pain began radiating from his neck down both arms and occasionally into his head. He also started to notice subtle but concerning changes in coordination, including dropping objects and clumsiness in his hands. Initially, he dismissed these symptoms as fatigue and continued to push forward, balancing his health challenges with the physical and mental demands of military leadership.

For several years, Jonathan pursued conservative treatment, including intensive physical therapy, medications, and activity modification. While some approaches provided temporary relief, they did not resolve the underlying issue. Even early imaging that showed cervical disc degeneration did not immediately lead to a clear path forward, leaving him managing symptoms while continuing to serve in demanding roles.

During this time, Jonathan took on the physically demanding role of drill sergeant, working long hours with limited recovery while responsible for training new soldiers. Despite worsening symptoms, he remained committed to his role and even turned to endurance training, including triathlons, to maintain a sense of control and connection to his body.

In July 2025, his condition took a sudden and serious turn after a routine activity left him in severe pain and unable to lift his left arm. This marked a turning point, leading to advanced imaging that confirmed cervical degenerative disc disease with radiculopathy and finally provided clarity after years of uncertainty.

After exhausting conservative options, Jonathan underwent a two level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C5 to C7 in December 2025. The surgery relieved the nerve compression, and many of his most concerning symptoms improved quickly, including the loss of strength and coordination in his hands.

While the initial relief was significant, recovery required patience and persistence. Residual muscle tension and stiffness lingered, and progress was not always linear. Through physical therapy and consistent effort, Jonathan focused on rebuilding strength, improving mobility, and gradually returning to activity. Walking became an essential part of his recovery, helping both his physical healing and mental resilience.

Outside of his spine journey, Jonathan continues to serve in the Army and is an Ironman Foundation Ambassador, using endurance sports to support community initiatives and raise awareness. His experience reshaped his understanding of resilience, emphasizing the importance of early recognition, self-advocacy, and trusting the recovery process.

Today, Jonathan continues to move forward in his recovery, steadily rebuilding his strength and returning to the activities he loves. His story highlights the importance of listening to your body, seeking answers, and staying committed through every stage of healing.
